Free event with Avril Bell, author of Becoming Tangata Tiriti
Hastings Library, Thursday September 26 – 5.30pm.
Avril Bell, author of Becoming Tangata Tiriti, is coming to Te Matau-a-Māui Hawke's Bay to speak at the Hastings Library.
Copies of Avril's book have been flying out bookshop doors since it was published just a few weeks ago and Auckland University Press have had to quickly order a reprint. Thursday September 26 will be an inspirational night. This free event starts at 5.30pm. Come join the conversation.
"Becoming Tangata Tiriti offers an invitation to Pākehā and, in fact, all non-Māori to be part of the conversation around what makes us New Zealanders - and how we might move forward in ways that are just and that enhance the mana of Māori and non-Māori alike."
Rebecca Kiddle – Ngāti Porou, Ngāpuhi, Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, co-author of Imagining Decolonisation.
Treaty & Me lecture series
On June 13 2024, former New Plymouth Mayor Andrew Judd kicked off a free Tiriti lecture series in Te Matau-a-Māui Hawke's Bay. Videos of all four nights are on our YouTube channel here
More than 700 people attended the series, which aimed to foster a public conversation about how Te Tiriti offers all New Zealanders a solid place to stand.
Andrew Judd spoke about 'Standing up as Treaty Partners'.
On June 27 Denis O'Reilly and Mary Kippenberger's topic was 'Imagining Matariki 2050'.
'What does honouring the Treaty look like?' was July 11's theme for Martin Williams, Kirsty Fong and Gwyn John.
The series finished on a high note with 'Living a Treaty-based future – A Youth Perspective' on July 25. Speakers there were Te Uranga Lee Belk and Piripi Winiata of Hastings firm Kawea Law, researcher Henry Lyons and Layla Christison, a recent graduate of the University of Auckland Bachelor of Health Sciences.
Each night involved speeches followed by panel discussion of written questions from the audience.
Hui at Waitangi February 2024
Nationwide there are dozens of groups organising Tiriti education wānanga, helping Tangata Tiriti to understand our individual and collective Tiriti obligations as citizens of Aotearoa New Zealand.
The intention of the February 2024 hui was to affirm these existing groups and to lay the groundwork for a broadly-based movement of New Zealanders who identify as Tangata Tiriti and who wish to honour and fulfil Te Tiriti o Waitangi in an authentic and principled way.
From kōrero with others we identified several core themes:
Inclusive – Tangata Tiriti Aotearoa is for all people regardless of where they are at on their personal journey to understand, honour and fulfil Te Tiriti;
Positive – Tangata Tiriti Aotearoa is for all people who believe that New Zealanders can co-operate and collaborate to create a beautiful future for all our grandchildren and build a flourishing nation, Aotearoa New Zealand;
Active – Tangata Tiriti Aotearoa is for all people who wish to take positive steps to ensure that the partnership implicit in Te Tiriti o Waitangi is enacted in pursuit of the wellbeing of all New Zealanders.
